Phoenix and Lettuce - Show Notes

The old Lettuce crew is back together in this week's
episode of The Lettuce Podcast! Tori stops by to guest moderate one of her favorite books: Phoenix and Ashes by Mercedes Lackey. This densely layered fantasy novel has a host of interesting themes to dissect, including a distinct theme for each host. Tori shares why the complex magical systems and WWI politics in the book are her favorite themes to explore. The interpretation of the Cinderella fairy tale has the girls comparing characters from each story, which leads to Charlotte's explanation of why she didn't find Reggie to be a good representation of the Prince. Laura chats about the function of Tarot cards in the novel and how it relates to traditional Tarot study. In addition, the girls chat about the function of magic, Reggie's PTSD, magical hierarchy, and more. Does Mercedes Lackey's version of this classic fairy tale fix some of the problems with Cinderella?  What makes the magic in this book unique? Is Warwick Locke the laziest name for a wizard? All of this topics and more and discussed on this week's episode of The Lettuce Podcast.

The Fun & Games segment features the return of House Hogwarts. Tori, Charlotte, and Laura fuse this world with Harry Potter to determine in which house each of the 4 main characters belongs. They also head to the addictive quiz site Sporcle to test their knowledge on mythical creatures. The girls scored very well on the quiz, but missed one answer. Listen to hear the clues for the creature they didn't know and tweet @TheLettucePod if you know the answer!

This week's podtail was inspired by the element fire, which is the specialty of the main character Eleanor: Killian's Irish Red Ale provided by Tori.

Cinderella - Show Notes

Happy New Year, Lettuce Heads! Our New Year's bonus episode is all about counting down to midnight. Charlotte moderates this episode about the magical fairy tale, Cinderella. Laura and Tori join her to discuss the 2015 live action film and compare it to the 1950 animated classic. Charlotte discusses the controversy surrounding the small waist of the film's title character. Tori's "Source Ma-Tori-al" segment returns and she shares the similarities between the original fairy tales (both Grimm & Perrault) and the movie adaptations. Laura rejoices at the appearance of Helena Bonham Carter in an atypical role. All three girls compare the live action and animated versions with some surprising conclusions. How does the concept of a Fairy Godmother relate to the concept of karma? Are goodness and kindness the only things you need to be able to obtain your goals? Shouldn't Cinderella and the Prince have gone on a couple dates before getting married? All these topics and more are discussed on this special bonus episode of The Lettuce Podcast!

Charlotte, Laura, and Tori give their ratings out of 5 chards for both the live action and animated films. Which film ended up with the best rating? You'll have to listen to find out! The Fun  & Games segment closed out 2015 with a classic game and a new favorite: Alphabet Sentence and Madlibs. Both games always challenge the hosts to access their creative sides and produce many laughs. This episode was no exception.

This episode's Podsnack: a pumpkin pudding parfait made by Laura and inspired by a classic Cinderella image: the pumpkin carriage.
This episodes Podtail: some delicious champagne, provided by Tori, to celebrate the New Year!
