A Feast For Cabbage - Show Notes

On this week's supersized episode of The Lettuce Podcast, Charlotte and Laura chat about A Feast for Crows, the 4th novel in George R. R. Martin's epic A Song of Ice and Fire series. They also discuss seasons 4 and 5 of HBO's Game of Thrones and compare to the source material. This journey back to Westeros finds the girls chatting about some new regions (Dorne and the Iron Isles), Cersei's grip on reality, and Samwell's romantic life. Charlotte enjoys watching Sansa get more of a backbone in the books, but dislikes her storyline in the TV series. Laura find Dorne to be a mysterious and interesting setting, and the Iron Isles to be a bore. Together the girls wonder about the fate of Brienne, argue about the moral compass of Tywin Lannister, and question the motives of Littlefinger. Was the ommission of beloved characters such as Daenarys and Tyrion a mistake? Does A Feast for Crows offer a satisfying plot? And will Jaime newfound independence from Cersei bring him success? All this and more is discussed on this week's episode!

For the girls' favorite section, Fun & Games, they begin by taking a quiz to determine their GoT soul mates. They also take turns selecting favorite characters and predicting where they think the ASOIF series will take them. Play along and leave your GoT soulmates and predictions in the comments!

Looking for a podtail to sip on while you listen? Laura suggests finding a sweet, heavy red wine (like a Dornish Red arbor vintage) or trying out one of Ommegang Brewery's special Game of Thrones beers.

A Sassafras of Swords - Show Notes

Charlotte and Laura head back to Westeros to chat about A Storm of Swords, the third book in George R.R. Martin's epic A Song of Ice and Fire series. They chat about the state of the major houses, Westeros' many kings, surprising plot points, and so much more. Charlotte talks about the incredible growth in Samwell Tarly's character, and how she feels about Sansa Stark's sad life. Laura gets frustrated with Arya and Bran, but loves Stannis' choice to aide in the fight against the White Walkers. They also discuss a controversial scene between Cercei and Jaime, whether or not the book should have featured Deanerys more, and take time to compare the book to Season 3 of HBO's Game of Thrones. Of the many deaths of major characters, which one was the most surprising? Does Tyrion's expectation of appreciation for his actions cause his demise? And does Tywin Lannister really shit gold? All of these subjects and many more are discussed in this week's supersized episode of The Lettuce Podcast!

For the Fun & Games segment, the girls bolster some family pride by creating their own banners, sigils, and house words. Then Charlotte challenges Laura to a game of Predictions, where she asks questions about what will happen next in the series.

Inspired by the heightened activity of the Others, Laura mixed up a White Walker to sip on as her podtail. Learn how to make your own here!

Feeling like there's a hole in your Sunday night because Game of Thrones is in hiatus? The Lettuce Podcast can help! On this week's episode, Charlotte guides Laura through the second installments of the epic book series A Song of Ice and Fire and its companion HBO series. In A Clash of Kings, the hosts chat about the many houses of Westeros, those who have crowned themselves kings, pivotal plot points, and more. They also compare scenes from the book to their depiction in the series and discuss the changes and liberties taken in Season 2 of Game of Thrones. She then explains her views on Sam's character arc and the path of his story with the Night's Watch. Laura shares why she understands Theon's struggle, but still thinks he's horrible. She also talks about why House Stark is divided physically and figuratively. Together the hosts try to figure out which Lannisters are actually evil and which are simply trying to protect the family name. Is Jaime good or bad? Is Joffrey the male version of Cercei? And is Baelon Greyjoy the worst dad in history? All these question and more are answered on this week's episode of The Lettuce Podcast!

In the Fun & Games segment, the girls take a quiz to find our which Game of Thrones character they would be and get very exciting results! Charlotte then puts Laura to the test and asks her to make predictions about the series going forward.

This week's Podtail was a homemade drink Laura made in honor of a new favorite character. Brienne the Blue is a strong but sweet drink comprised of honey whiskey, blue curacao, blackberry flavored sprakling water, and blueberries.

A Game of Lettuce - Show Notes

Winter is coming! The Lettuce Podcast features the first book in George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series: A Game of Thrones in this week's episode! Charlotte moderates this jam-packed show about her favorite book and television series. She, Laura, and Tori sit down on the Iron Throne to discuss the Houses, character development, character relationships, and Westeros' kings in A Game of Thrones. Each host shares their experience with the Game of Thrones phenomenon. They also chat about their favorite and unfavorite characters, and compare the book to its companion T.V. series. Charlotte talks about the growth of Samwell Tarly from admitted craven to Jon Snow's knowledgeable sidekick over the course of the book. Laura explains why Cersei is terrible as a person, but amazing as a character. Tori points out certain traits of House Stark that remind her of Scandinavian culture and folklore. All three hosts share a love for Tyrion Lannister and a dislike (read: hate!) for Joffrey Baratheon. Do impulsive decisions and unfair treatment of bastard children make Catelyn Stark an unlikable character? Is Robert Baratheon's party-all-the-time personality suitable for ruling a kingdom? Is Loras Tyrell a figure skater stuck in a Medieval world? All these subjects and more are brought to the table in this week's episode of The Lettuce Podcast!

Charlotte introduces a new Predictions segment, where she challenges Laura (the host with the least familiarity with A Song of Ice and Fire) to guess certain plot outcomes/twists in the series. For the Fun & Games segment, the girls bring back an old favorite: Kill, Marry, Pity Date! Listen to find out who gets betrothed and who gets beheaded. The second game, called House Hogwarts, find our hosts fusing the GoT and Harry Potter worlds. Charlotte, Laura, and Tori each sort a favorite and unfavorite character into one of the four Hogwarts Houses. Comment on this post to tell us where your favorite GoT character fit in at Hogwarts!

For the podtail, Charlotte mixed the official drink of Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish: Jack Rose! The podsnack was lemon cake (Sansa's favorite), provided by Laura. If you would like to mix your own Jack Rose or other Game of Thrones cocktails, you can find some great recipes here: 10 Cocktails Inspired by the Men of Game of Thrones. To make your own lemon cakes, check out this recipe or the recipe from the official Game of Thrones cookbook A Feast of Ice and Fire!

Game of Thrones season 5 episode 2

"The House of Black and White"

We finally see Arya arrive in Bravos and she immediately heads to the House of Black and White. She gets turned away and ends up spending the night on the steps reciting only four names of her kill list. What happened to the handful of others she wanted to kill? Brienne and Pod at last have a stroke of luck and end up in the same tavern as Littlefinger and Sansa. Brienne pledges her sword to Sansa, who refuses and of course that means Brienne fights her way out slashing everything in sight and saving Pod. They agree to follow Littlefinger and Sansa. Dorne threatens Myrcella by sending a "gift" to Cercei. Jamie says he will go and retrieve Myrcella who also happens to be their daughter. Meanwhile, Bron is with Lollis and they want pigeon pie for their wedding. Unfortunately, this get cuts short by Jamie "fucking" Lannister, who wants Bron to help him save Myrcella. The Dorne story starts with Ellaria's fist and her blood pressure is definitively rising. Prince Doran tries to calm her down, but his level-headed advice is quickly dismissed by Ellaria. Daario Naharis and Greyworm track down one of the Sons of the Harpy by stabbing him through a wall. Barristan Selmy convinces Daenerys to give him a trial instead of an execution. Varys and Tyrion are on the road to Volantis, which will take them to the road to Meereen. Tyrion thinks that Cercei should offer her cunt for his head instead of a lordship: "The best part of her for the best part of me", he said. Meanwhile, Cercei is being put in her place by her uncle Kevin Lannister, who seems to be the only person in Kings Landing who isn't willing let Cercei pull the wool over his eyes. We then move to a scene where Shireen is teaching Gilly how to read. Unfortunately, Sam tries to show off his reading skills while Shireen and Gilly pretty much ignore him. We learn about Shireen's greyscale which could be potential foreshadowing if the show follows the books. Stanis gets his ass handed to him by a 10 year old girl. Jon Snow finds it pretty funny, but Stanis knows how to wipe the smile off his face by giving him a surprising offer. Jon could be legitimate, for a price... Quit the Wall and swear loyalty to Stanis. We then all get mind-fucked when Sam volunteers Jon as a candidate to be Lord Commander and Jon ends up winning. Poor Stanis will never get the North it seems. Arya decapitates a pigeon and finds out the man that turned her away from the House of Black and White was Jaqen H'ghar, a truly faceless man. He lets her in this time. Mossador, who is on Daenerys' council, kills the Sons of the Harpy member they caught and confesses to the whole council. She sentences him to death and ends up doing the dumbest thing ever by making it a public execution. Daenerys gets hissed at and has rocks thrown at her... What a popular ruler, right? Drogon ends the episode with an epic reappearance.

That's all I have for this episode, folks! Check back next week for another episode breakdown.

-Charlotte

Game of Thrones season 5 begins!!!!

As I mentioned in our introduction podcast, I am a huge Game of Thrones fan. I've read all of the released books and watch the HBO series. Since the first episode of Season 5 was released last weekend, I thought I'd write a short recap.

Season 5, Episode 1
"The Wars To Come"

Cersei was a bitch even as a child and finds out karma is coming back to her and her children. Serves her right for incest even if her brother Jamie is cute! Tyron Lannister enjoys drinking wine, throwing it up, and drinking more wine. Also, did he wash his hands after pushing his poop out of the crate for weeks after all that wine?! Sanitation people! Jon Snow is not a virgin and Melisandre creepily likes that. Stannis Baratheon wants Jon's help... be a real king Stannis, get your own army! Daenerys likes dat ass. Sansa Stark is plotting with 'Littlefinger', that's a great way to get screwed over... literally. Plot with someone with a better nickname. Jamie Lannister takes Cersei putting him down... He has not gotten his balls back since he lost his hand. Brienne of Tarth threw a hissy fit while not noticing Sansa rides by. She needs a break, my god! Margaery loves watching her bother have sex with his boy toy while plotting against Cersei. No Boltens, no Arya, no Bran, no Gendry, no Greyjoys, no Jorah Mormont, no Dorne.

That's all folks! Hope you enjoyed my quick recap! I'll be back next week with a recap of the second episode.

-Charlotte
