Lettuce Begins - Show Notes

It's a new year, a new beginning, and a new Lettuce Podcast. Laura and Charlotte start the new chapter of the podcast with an origin story: Batman Begins. They have a lively discussion where they discuss their individual experiences with Batman movies, how Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy fits into the franchise, and how the film operates as an origin story. A discussion about the films characters, both good and bad, brings up some divided feelings. Laura shares that she likes the character of Rachel Dawes, but felt Katie Holmes' portrayal was stiff. In response, Charlotte explains why she feels Holmes' portrayal fit the character. Charlotte also shares that she didn't get much of a sense for the character of James Gordon and Laura agrees that his role in the film was small, but feels it was important in some aspects. They both agree that the film's villains, Ra's al Ghul and Scarecrow, were pretty creepy! Laura and Charlotte also talk about classic Batman imagery/themes seen through the film and how they helped the film both fit into the franchise and stand out on its own. Did Batman Begins change the superhero movie genre? Does Bruce Wayne fit into his "fake" playboy persona too easily? Is it believable that Alfred and Lucius Fox would agree to aiding a masked vigilante with little to no questioning? All these subjects and more on this week's episode of The Lettuce Podcast!

The ratings section brings the first ever tie rating: 4.25 Chards. Laura and Charlotte also put their creative minds to the test with a round of Alphabet Sentence. Finally, the Fun & Games section is closed out with TLP's favorite game: Kill, Marry, Pity Date. The Shout-Outs/Listener Mail section brings a question from our old pal, Tori, who wonders how the surge in DC-comic based television shows has effected the viewing of Batman Begins and the Dark Knight trilogy as a whole.

Our Batman Begins podtail was a hot toddy made by Charlotte and inspired by Bruce Wayne's time spent in the East with the League of Shadows. She used apple brandy and apple-vanilla tea to make them. Follow the recipe in the picture above to make your own!

Lastly, the podcast closed with some special announcements. The Lettuce Podcast is going weekly! In addition to the bi-weekly episodes, a new episode entitled "The Lettuce Beets" will release in between each Topic Episode. The Lettuce Beets will be a more free-form conversation where Charlotte and Laura will discuss their current entertainment interests, their lives, share stories, and perhaps play a game or two. The other big announcement made was Charlotte's upcoming move to Minnesota where she'll be opening up a MN-based branch of The Lettuce Podcast (she got a new job!). Charlotte's move is great and exciting, but we're certainly thrilled that we'll still be able to continue with the podcast. Check the end of this post for how Charlotte's move will affect our release schedule.

The Lettuce Podcast can be found on iTunes, Podcast Addict for Android devices, or Stitcher. If you like what you hear, feel free to leave a comment on this or any blog post. The next episode of The Lettuce Podcast will release on January 31st and will be the inaugural episode of The Lettuce Beets.

Our next Topic Episode will be about the Netflix series Jessica Jones, releasing on February 14th. More superhero action!
Due to Charlotte's move, we will not be able to start a weekly schedule until February. Our new weekly release schedule will begin with the release of Jessica Jones. We're really looking forward to this new and exciting change. We hope our audience is as excited as we are!

Until then,

Lettuce Wars: The Lettuce Awakens - Show Notes

May the Force be with you! The Lettuce Podcast travels to a galaxy far, far away to chat about Star Wars: The Force Awakens in this all-moderated episode. Charlotte, Tori, and Laura discuss the characters both old and new, how Episode VII fits into the Star Wars and Disney franchises, and the use of technology in creating the look of the film. Charlotte and Tori talk about their love of the character Finn, while Laura finds him less likeable. Tori talks about the new Cantina song and its composer, who also wrote the musical Hamilton. Laura mentions her relief that a love story was not forced into the story. Charlotte shares that she found the use of 3D technology more enjoyable that most other films. What made Kylo Ren turn to the dark side? Is the character of Rey too perfect? Is Poe Dameron more than just a smarmy pilot? All these topics and more are up for debate in this week's episode!

The ratings sections bring a good showing for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The average rating out of 5 Chards was 4.25! The Fun & Games segment brought a fun quiz to the table: Which Color Lightsaber Would You Wield?. Take the quiz along with us and tell us your result! Lastly, a round of Kill, Marry, Pity Date closed out Fun & Games.

It was a very eventful Shout-Outs segment! Laura and Charlotte read comments
from friends and family who wanted to share their thoughts about Episode VII. A special thanks to Rich, Laura (Charlotte's sister), and William for sharing their thoughts in this section.

The winners of The Lettuce Podcast's first giveaway were also announced. Congratulations to our winners! Please send an e-mail to thelettucepodcast@gmail.com with the address to which you'd like your prize sent.

Our Star Wars Podsnack was Princess Leia Cinnamon Buns made by Tori. The Podtail was a Qui Gon Gin & Tonic made by Laura.

Lastly, a special announcement was made: Tori will be returning to school starting this spring semester and will be taking more of a backseat in The Lettuce Podcast car as a result. She'll still be stopping by to act as a guest or guest moderator from time time, but Charlotte and Laura will be taking the helm. We're happy to be able to help Tori achieve her goals, but sad that we'll be a seeing a bit less of her. Good luck!
