The Wise Man's Fern (The Kingkiller Chronicle, Book 2) - Show Notes

On this week's new episode of The Lettuce Podcast, Laura and Charlotte return to Patrick Rothfuss' The Kingkiller Chronicle series and discuss the series' second book A Wise Man's Fear. They chat about the incredible protagonist Kvothe and his studies at The University, his patronage to a wealthy aristocrat, sexual development with the famed faerie Felurian, training as a mercenary in the Adem style, and much more. Laura explains what writing techniques weren't a home run for her, and which aspects of Kvothe's journey kept her from putting the book down. Charlotte shares which section of the story put her to sleep(!), and which side characters delighted her the most. Together the girls wonder about the history and fate of the mysterious Denna, praise Rothfuss' vast display of strong female characters, wish the antagonistic Ambrose would get a life, and look forward to the final chapter in this wonderful series. Is Kvothe his best self when he's studying at The University? Are the Adem's views on sexuality and the human body fully progressive? And, are Sim and Fela the cutest couple in the world? All these topics are brought to the table on this week's episode!

The Fun & Games segment was partially inspired by Kvothe's time spent in the fae with Felurian. Laura and Charlotte used a name generator to discover their faerie name and personalities. They also took the opportunity to cast some predictions about what the final book in The Kingkiller Chronicle will deliver, including what the hope to see from the close of the series and a grim predicition for the future of Denna. Do you have thoughts about the third book in this series? Leave them in a comment!

Lettuce Who (Doctor Who S1)

On this all new episode of The Lettuce Podcast, Laura takes Charlotte aboard the TARDIS for her first adventure with Doctor Who! They invite their pal Cory on as a guest to chat about Christopher Eccleston's series as the Ninth Doctor. They discuss Eccleston's portrayal as the eponymous Doctor, Rose Tyler as the conduit for the viewer, the various aliens and monsters, and much more. Laura explains her struggle with Rose's boyfriend Mickey, and why the Autons feel scary. Charlotte shares her experience as a Doctor Who first-timer and whether she's interested in watching more. Cory helps explain the Bad Wolf storyline, and shares his history with the Doctor Who series. Together the Lettuceheads reveal their favorite episodes from Series 1, get creeped out by the Empty Children, and fawn over the charming Captain Jack Harkness. Is Christopher Eccleston's dark doctor persona a necessary character trait, or does he need to be a bigger nerd? Why are the Daleks so scary despite looking so silly? And what exactly is Jack Harkness' sexual identity? All these questions and more are on the table for debate in this week's episode!

For the Fun & Games segment Laura, Charlotte, and Cory took a quiz to find out which Doctor they are . They then played a round of “What Would You Do?” where Laura asked Charlotte and Cory questions about being a companion to Doctor Who and what they would do in each scenario. Play along and tell us what you would do as a companion in the comments!

They discuss the expanded cast of characters, fictional Gilead's relationship to the current US political climate, whether they'd like the story to continue, and more. Together they marvel at Emily's strength in the Colonies, wonder what Nick's fate in Gilead is, and celebrate Rita's expanded character and personality. Could the Republic of Gilead really happen? What's June next move? And is Fred Waterford the biggest jerk to have ever existed? All these subjects and more are up for debate on this week's episode of The Lettuce Podcast.

For the Fun & Games segment, Laura puts Charlotte to the test with a homemade quiz called “Ofbook or Oftv”. Laura lists a series of plot points from The Handmaid's Tale and Charlotte decides if they happen in the book or the tv show. They also play a round of a classic TLP game: Alphabet Sentence.
