Field Mix: Funny Music - Show Notes

This episode of The Lettuce Podcast combines two of Laura's favorite things: music and comedy! She shares 5 musical comedy albums with Charlotte, which produces conversations unlike any before on the show. The girls share their personal experience with each artist, their favorite tracks off each album, and whether they think the jokes are funny. Laura talks about Garfunkel & Oates feminine aesthetic and which album is her go-to for a laugh. Charlotte appreciates The Lonely Island's collaborations with other artists on Turtleneck & Chain and Bo Burnham's witty wordplay. The girls also discuss what specifically makes Flight of the Conchords funny, when jokes become too crass, and give a rating out of 5 Chards to each album. Does Paul & Storm's wide range of musical styles make their music confusing or more fun? Does Bo Burnham's arrogant character help or hurt his comedy? And is The Lonely Island's “Motherlover” funny satire or just too gross? All these questions and more are addressed on this week's brand new episode of The Lettuce Podcast.

For the Fun & Games segment, Laura and Charlotte play their favorite game to accompany music topics: Haiku! This round is especially relevant as one of the albums covered also features haiku. The second game is a variation on Madlibs using 10 popular song titles. Laura and Charlotte take a stab at creating some comical song titles of their own by filling in the blanks.

This week's podtails were rather tame, as the girls weren't in much of a drinking mood. Charlotte enjoyed a classy glass of wine while Laura sipped on Coconut-Lime tea in a bass clef mug!

House of Cauliflowers: Season 1

This week's episode of The Lettuce Podcast focused on another new entertainment adventure: House of Cards. Charlotte takes the reigns on this topic to guide Laura through a discussion about Season 1 of Netflix's flagship original program. They discuss the vivid cast of characters, how believable the politics of the show are, and whether they want Frank to succeed. Charlotte explains what about the show is difficult to enjoy, but why it is still engaging for the viewer. Laura identifies which character she found to have the most growth and which became a surprising favorite. The girls also discuss the incredible acting performance of House of Cards' leads, what's up with Remy Dalton, and a character Laura loves, but Charlotte hates – you'll have to listen to find out who! Also on the table for debate: Is Zoe naïve or in control? Is Frank likeble in any way? Does Doug Stamper's face match is ruthless character?

For the Fun & Games segment, the girls play one classic game and one free-form. The classic games was a Which House of Cards Character Are You? Buzzfeed quiz. The free-form Predictions Game had Charlotte and Laura asking and answering questions about what they think will happen next in this bold and twisting tale. Comment on this post to let us know what you think!

Podtails for this episode were inspired by Frank Underwood's Southern upbringing and Peter Russo's sad fate. Laura enjoyed a Peach Tea Old Fashioned while Charlotte sipped on a beer.

Girl on the Lettuce - Show Notes

This week on The Lettuce Podcast, Laura and Charlotte explore uncharted territory with The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins. Our hosts took a chance on this book, which neither of them had read previously, and the results did not disappoint. They explore the triads of female and male characters, portrayal of various mental illnesses, and the aspects of “psychological thriller” presented by this popular novel. Laura expresses her appreciation of the portrayal of depression through Megan's character and dislike of Anna's attitude. Charlotte shares why she was able to be sympathetic to Rachel's misguided actions, but not Megan's. Both chat about why the men in the novel are scary, the many layers of domestic abuse, and the thrill of solving a mystery through the eyes of an unreliable witness. Laura and Charlotte also take some time to talk about the 2016 film adaptation of the novel, comparing and contrasting to its source material. Can Rachel figure out if she to blame for the tragic disappearance of a young woman? Are Megan and Scott both to blame for their strained marriage? And is Anna only interesting when she's someone's mistress? All these subjects and more are on the table for this week's episode of The Lettuce Podcast.

For Fun & Games, Laura and Charlotte decided to stick to some classic TLP games to accompany this new topic. They had a fun time retelling the plot of Girl on the Train through Madlibs and then had their most successful round of Alphabet Sentence to date!

Podtails for The Girl on the Train were chosen with Rachel, the alcoholic protagonist, truly in mind. Laura chose a Gin & Tonic (Rachel's cocktail of choice in the book) while Charlotte chose to finish off a bottle of champagne left in her home by a guest. Note: the champagne had been left 4 months prior and we felt this was something Rachel would do in her darkest of days.
