Girl on the Lettuce - Show Notes

This week on The Lettuce Podcast, Laura and Charlotte explore uncharted territory with The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins. Our hosts took a chance on this book, which neither of them had read previously, and the results did not disappoint. They explore the triads of female and male characters, portrayal of various mental illnesses, and the aspects of “psychological thriller” presented by this popular novel. Laura expresses her appreciation of the portrayal of depression through Megan's character and dislike of Anna's attitude. Charlotte shares why she was able to be sympathetic to Rachel's misguided actions, but not Megan's. Both chat about why the men in the novel are scary, the many layers of domestic abuse, and the thrill of solving a mystery through the eyes of an unreliable witness. Laura and Charlotte also take some time to talk about the 2016 film adaptation of the novel, comparing and contrasting to its source material. Can Rachel figure out if she to blame for the tragic disappearance of a young woman? Are Megan and Scott both to blame for their strained marriage? And is Anna only interesting when she's someone's mistress? All these subjects and more are on the table for this week's episode of The Lettuce Podcast.

For Fun & Games, Laura and Charlotte decided to stick to some classic TLP games to accompany this new topic. They had a fun time retelling the plot of Girl on the Train through Madlibs and then had their most successful round of Alphabet Sentence to date!

Podtails for The Girl on the Train were chosen with Rachel, the alcoholic protagonist, truly in mind. Laura chose a Gin & Tonic (Rachel's cocktail of choice in the book) while Charlotte chose to finish off a bottle of champagne left in her home by a guest. Note: the champagne had been left 4 months prior and we felt this was something Rachel would do in her darkest of days.
